Closing Doors - Welcome Home, Son

"It's not a death. And it's not a tragedy. But it's not nothing, either..."💔
"I wasn't wrong about their leaving. People kept telling me I was. That it wasn't the end of the world.  But it was the end of something.
I was the sun and they were the planets. And there was life on those planets, whirling, non stop plans and parties and friends coming and going, and ideas and dreams and the phone ringing and doors slamming.
And I got to beam down on them. To watch. To glow.
And then they were gone, one after the other.
"They'll be back," people said. And they were right. They came back. But they were wrong, too, because they came back for intervals -- not for always, not planets anymore, making their predictable orbits, but unpredictable, like shooting stars.
"A chapter ends. Another chapter begins."
"One door closes and another door opens."
"The best thing a parent can give his child is wings."
I read all these things when my children left home and thought then what I think now: What do these words mean?
Eighteen years isn't a chapter in anyone's life. It's a whole book, and that book is ending and what comes next is connected to, but different from, everything that has gone before.
Before was an infant, a toddler, a child, a teenager. Before was feeding and changing and teaching and comforting and guiding and disciplining, everything hands-on. Now?
As for a door closing? Would that you could close a door and forget for even a minute your children and your love for them and your fear for them, too. And would that they occupied just a single room in your head. But they're in every room in your head and in your heart.
As for the wings analogy? It's sweet. But children are not birds. Parents don't let them go and build another nest and have all new offspring next year.
Saying goodbye to your children and their childhood is much harder than all the pithy sayings make it seem.
It's not a death. And it's not a tragedy.
But it's not nothing, either.
The drive home without them is the worst. And the first few days. But then it gets better. Life does go on.
I miss them, still, all these years later, the children they were, at the dinner table, beside me on the couch, talking on the phone, sleeping in their rooms, safe, home, mine...."

Week 107 - Poznan

Elder Jablonski, Sister Larsen, Elder Larsen, Elder Hadfield

Hello everyone for the last time from Poland!  I want to thank everyone for your support and prayers, this has been the adventure of a lifetime.  I have a lot of thoughts about my mission, but I’m afraid if I started attempting to express them using my own words, they’d come out as cliche phrases, like “it’s been the best two years”, or “I changed more than anyone I ever taught”.  So, I’m going to turn to the scriptures:

Alma 26
[...]My brothers and my brethren, behold I say unto you, how great reason have we to rejoice; for could we have supposed when we started from the land of Zarahemla that God would have granted unto us such great blessings? And now, I ask, what great blessings has he bestowed upon us? Can ye tell?  Behold, I answer for you; for our brethren, the Lamanites, were in darkness [...] but behold, how many of them are brought to behold the marvelous light of God! And this is the blessing which hath been bestowed upon us, that we have been made instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work. [...] Blessed be the name of our God; let us sing to his praise, yea, let us give thanks to his holy name, for he doth work righteousness forever.  For if we had not come up out of the land of Zarahemla, these our dearly beloved brethren, who have so dearly beloved us, would still [...] have been strangers to God. [...]my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God. Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.  Behold, how many [...] of our brethren has he loosed from the pains of hell; and they are brought to sing redeeming love [...] therefore have we not great reason to rejoice? [...]behold, he has brought them into his everlasting light, yea, into everlasting salvation; and they are encircled about with the matchless bounty of his love; yea, and we have been instruments in his hands of doing this great and marvelous work. Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel.  Who could have supposed that our God would have been so merciful as to have snatched us from our [...] sinful[...] state? [...]Behold, he [...] in his great mercy hath brought us over that everlasting gulf of death and misery, even to the salvation of our souls. [...]Now do ye remember, my brethren, that we said unto our brethren in the land of Zarahemla, we go up to the land of Nephi, to preach unto our brethren, the Lamanites, and they laughed us to scorn? For they said unto us: Do ye suppose that ye can bring the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth? Do ye suppose that ye can convince the Lamanites of the incorrectness of the traditions of their fathers[...]? [...]But behold, my beloved brethren, we came [...] with the intent that perhaps we might save some few of their souls.  Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success. And now behold, we have come, and been forth amongst them; and we have been patient in our sufferings, and we have suffered every privation; yea, we have traveled from house to house, relying upon the mercies of the world—not upon the mercies of the world alone but upon the mercies of God. And we have entered into their houses and taught them, and we have taught them in their streets; yea, and we have taught them upon their hills[...] And we have suffered [...] this, that perhaps we might be the
means of saving some soul; and we supposed that our joy would be full if perhaps we could be the means of saving some.  Now behold, we can look forth and see the fruits of our labors; and are they few? I say unto you, Nay, they are many[...] Now have we not reason to rejoice? Yea, I say unto you, there never were men that had so great reason to rejoice as we, since the world began; yea, and my joy is carried away, even unto boasting in my God; for he has all power, all wisdom, and all understanding; he comprehendeth all things, and he is a merciful Being, even unto salvation, to those who will repent and believe on his name. Now if this is boasting, even so will I boast; for this is my life and my light, my joy and my salvation, and my redemption from everlasting wo. Yea, blessed is the name of my God, who has been mindful of this people, [...] I say, blessed be the name of my God, who has been mindful of us, wanderers in a strange land. Now my brethren, we see that God is mindful of every people, whatsoever land they may be in; yea, he numbereth his people, and his bowels of mercy are over all the earth. Now this is my joy, and my great thanksgiving; yea, and I will give thanks unto my God forever. Amen.

Mosiah 18:30
And now it came to pass that all this was done in [Poland], yea, by the waters of [Poland], in the forest that was near the waters of [Poland]; yea, the place of [Poland], the waters of [Poland], the forest of [Poland], how beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer; yea, and how blessed are they, for they shall sing to his praise forever.

Week 106 - Poznan

Hey there,
It feels like things have been going slow lately. We've been working pretty hard, but people don't answer their phone or text back, it's just been difficult to set up meetings.  We did meet a new guy named A, from Turkey, and we had our first meeting with him, and it went really well.  We taught him the Restoration, and it went super well. I really enjoyed that lesson. The Spirit was strong and he expressed desires to really find out if this is true.  That was my favorite part of the week. It reminded me of my time in Warsaw when it felt like we just had meetings all the time.  He said he would come to church on Sunday, but he wasn't able to make it.  We've tried to get in contact with him, but nothing yet, hoping we can get a hold of him this week, he seemed so promising.
That was our only meeting this week, so other than that, we did a lot of finding, which has also been going a little slower than usual, but we keep grinding, hope something good comes up this week.  No new news about who will be the next branch president, President Turek should be in church this upcoming Sunday, so we'll find out then.  The Larson's leave next Monday, so we'll find out soon.
We've been able to do some work with less-actives, just trying to contact them and actualize the branch list, a request from President Larson before he leaves.  We've been able to get some good things going with that and actualize the branch list a little bit.  (As an example, we visited a less-active member and found out he passed away 6 years ago.  Kinda weird, but for the Church in Poland it's normal for the branch lists to be way out of date.)
A couple days ago, I also started compiling a list of the effects of Abinadi's ministry, and it's been an enlightening exercise.  The most fun part of the week was on Friday, we went with the Larson's out to a city called Wronki not far from Poznań.  That's the city where Elder Jabłoński's great-great grandfather is from, and so he wanted to get some info for genealogical, work.  We were at a cemetery searching for graves with a couple names, and he met a young couple who's last names are Jabłoński.  So he's in contact with them, and that was a cool experience, and it was also fun to spend time with the Larson's.  I've really lucked out with senior couples on my mission.
Have a great week!

Week 105 - Poznan

Elders Hadfield & Erickson - October 26, 2016 - November 20, 2018
Hello! How are you all doing lately?  Hope life is treating you all well, things are going well for me here in Poznań.  It was yet another quick week, they all feel so fast.

Monday: Just had a chill p-day, we went to the mall and also had branch FHE in the evening.  We also helped out a member with something in the evening, which was fun.

Tuesday: We did a bit of finding, which was solid.  We had lunch at a member's apartment, B., and that was great.  She's such a solid member, she's been through a lot.  We did weekly planning in the afternoon, then in the evening, we were supposed to meet with a potential, M., but it ended up not happening.  We had our branch mission correlation meeting with S., which went well, he suggested some cool things for questions we could ask people when we contact, so we've been trying some of that, which has been fun.

Wednesday: We did some English finding in the morning, which went well.  The attendance at our English classes and at our religious discussions has been down, so we've been trying to do a little English finding every week.  We did some more contacting in the afternoon, and had English class in the evening.

Thursday: We had our weekly service project at the hospice in the morning, which went well.  Apparently missionaries have been volunteering there weekly for about 3 years, which is pretty cool.  We did some contacting during the afternoon in addition to studies, and we had English class in the evening again.

Friday: Zone Conference!  That was a way good time.  We had zone conference in Wrocław this time, which was my first time there.  I'd heard it was one of the prettiest cities in Poland, and it was pretty, but not quite on the Kraków level...just saying, @PresidentTurek.  It was a way good conference though, President taught some great things about creative finding and it was way enjoyable.  I also got to bear my final testimony with Elder Erickson, which was a good time, he's a legend.

Saturday: We did studies in the morning, and had English just after noon.  Only one person ended up coming, and they left pretty early, but we were able to spontaneously set up a meeting with S., which ended up going pretty well.  We watched some talks from this last conference, including President Oaks', and he enjoyed them, we had a good talk about the Plan of Salvation.  We cleaned the chapel with a member, R., from the Philippines, which was cool.  We then were going to go out to a small town called Stare Kurowo to meet with a potential, but it ended up being canceled.  So we did some more finding in the evening.

Sunday: Sunday was a good day, Church was pretty bomb.  There's a military base here in Poznań, and there are a few members from the States that are in the military that come to church, and two of them had talks and one of them taught Sunday school.  They were all way good, I really enjoyed it.  The Spirit was strong there.  It was good, because there were a couple less-actives that were there as well as one of our English students and a former, so hopefully they were able to feel the Spirit present there and they'll have a desire to keep coming.  We did some studies and some contacting in the evening, and it was a fun day.

So that was our week.  It was another good one, we're hoping to build off of some things that happened this week, and we'll see what this next one has in store.  Hope you are all doing well, have a solid week!

Week 104 - Poznan

We had a lot of finding this last week, which actually went pretty well, we met some cool people.  We have a meeting with a guy named M for the first time tomorrow, and we'll see how that goes.  We met a cool guy on the streets named G, and he's way humble and open.  We talked for a bit with him, and we exchanged numbers and gave him a Book of Mormon, and we've been in contact, hopefully we'll be able to meet.

We also met another cool guy named M last night, hopefully we'll be able to set up to meet with him.

On Friday evening we went to go visit a less-active not terribly far from our apartment, so we started contacting in the general direction of the address.  We didn't have a map, so we were kind of just hoping to stumble across it, and that's exactly what happened.  We started out going the wrong direction, and while we were going the wrong direction we met G, so that was a cool miracle.  We made a big loop, contacting on the way, and had another good conversation with someone, and we stumbled across the street we needed only 2 minutes from the address.  So that was a cool series of events, and we ended up being able to get the information about the less-active that we needed.  So it was a cool evening, being able to look back and see how we were led.

As far as my tastes, I think they have changed at least a little bit. Elder Jabłoński and I found a cake mix in the other sisters' apartment, and we made it and ate it yesterday, and it was tasty, but we both just felt sick afterwards, I'm not used to that much sugar haha.  There aren't really any spicy things here, so I'm excited to see how that'll be when I go home.

Week 103 - Poznan

Hey all!  This week was another quick one here in Poznań.

Monday: I had eight hours of train rides to and from Warsaw to pick up my new companion, Elder Jabłoński, so it was a pretty boring day overall.

Tuesday: We help the senior couple clean out an apartment that is getting shut down here soon.  We also did some finding and weekly planning, and had branch mission correlation meeting in the evening.

Wednesday: We did some more contacting in the morning, we had English in the evening, and we also watched the last session from conference, the Sunday afternoon session.  That was probably my favorite session, it felt like there was just one great talk right after another, I was a fan.

Thursday: The elders from Bydgoszcz were here on exchanges, and that was a good time.  I was with Elder Chugg in the morning, when we went to our weekly service project at the hospice, we had district council, then Elder Augenstein and I did studies and had some fun contacting.  It was a good day.

Friday: We had some contacting in the morning, which went well.  We met a guy named Marek who said he'd be down to meet, so we'll see if we can set up something for this week.  We had a meeting with S. in the afterrnoon, which went well.  We committed him to watch some conference with us this week, so we'll see how that goes.

Saturday: We had lunch at B's house, which was good.  She's a good member, and she has a lot of fun stories about past missionaries.  We had English class, which was alright, did some contacting and studies.  We were going to have a meeting with R., but he called and asked if we could meet on Sunday instead.

Saturday: We had church in the morning, which was a good time.  I like the members here in Poznań.  Also did some finding in the afternoon, then R. called and canceled, so we did some more finding in the evening.

So yea, that was our week.  We've got a number of people we have met on the streets, just having a hard time getting a hold of them and setting up to get new people to teach.  Hopefully we will see some success with that this week.  Hope you are all doing well, have a good week!

Week 102 - Poznan

Hey y'all!  How are things going?  Hope you all had a good week and that things are good for you.  Things are going well here in Poznań, we are doing a lot of finding, and it's going well so far.

On Monday, we had FHE in the evening, and we went out contacting with one of the members here in the evening, which was fun.

Tuesday, we had weekly planning in the morning, then did some more contacting in the afternoon.  We met a cool guy named Ra., who we ended up meeting with later in the week.  He's open minded and a cool guy in his twenties.  Unfortunately, he returns to where he lives in Gdańsk today, so we probably won't be able to meet with him again.  We'll give his info to the missionaries there and see what happens.  We also had branch missionary correlation meeting in the evening.

Wednesday, we had a lot of time for finding.  The contacting was pretty slow in the afternoon, then we had English class.  After English class, we had about 30 minutes to contact, and we had some pretty solid convos, so that was fun.

Thursday was a very busy day.  We had a service project at a hospice that we do every week, we did some weeding, which was fun.  Elder Long and I talked a lot about college football and BYU and stuff during that, it was fun.  Elder Long's a great guy, I'm glad I get to serve with him this transfer.  We also had district meeting later in the day, then in the evening we had English class again.

On Friday, we had a couple meetings, which was solid.  We met with Ro. through Skype, and that went alright.  He still has a lot of things to understand, we'll see how we can help him moving forward.  In the evening, we also met with Ra., who we had met on Tuesday, and that was good.  We also had some good finding.

Saturday, we had English class and we helped clean the chapel a bit. Also had some contacting, and in the afternoon we went to visit a member named B.  She is a really solid member who just had surgery on her broken arm this past week, so we were there to see how she was doing and read from the Book of Mormon.  She's way solid.

Sunday was way good as well.  Church was a good experience, fast and testimony meeting was solid.  We also had a 'break-the-fast' lunch afterwards as a branch, which was a good time.  We had 3 of our current potentials come to church, which was way cool.  We're hoping we can get them to start taking the lessons here soon.  Also did some more contacting in the evening, which ended up going well.  Pretty much everyone was really nice, even if they didn't have time to stop and talk.

And yea, that was basically our week.  It was another quick one, and we're looking forward to the one we have ahead of us.  One thing I'm especially excited for is conference this weekend!  Really pumped to be able to hear from the inspired leaders of the Church.  I also saw this cool video on lds.org to get y'all pumped for conference, I like the end of the video where it says 'Prepare to be inspired' haha.  Anyway, hope you are all doing well, have another great week!

Week 101 - Poznan

Elder Hadfield with President Turek - conducting Zone Conference

Matching duck ties for these friends who came to Poland together (Hadfield, Erickson, Dossett)
Elders Dossett, Hadfield, Maslowski, Malachowski (office)

Notes on the photos from Sister Murri (Bialystok):

The first photo— I didn’t know he had this hidden talent.  He practiced until other missionaries showed up.  He had come to Warsaw early, with us.  (They helped us set up.)  He was a much better player than the sister who played for Zone conference.  When I talked to him about that later, he said he asked her to play to let her share her talent and have the growth.  I was impressed.

The second photo is with President Turek.  Your son is conducting Zone conference.  He did a great job!

The third photo is during a teaching session.  He also did a great job at that!  This companion is Elder Maslowski.  That all changed after Zone conference, and our loss will be Poznan’s gain.

The fourth photo—Meeting up with his former companion and the AP’s.  Note the tie.  It is about to change to the duck ties.  I think it is the group that came out together wanted matching ties.  The store couldn’t match them, but they did have a variety of colors with the same duck on them.  These are supposed to be great ties that a former investigator sells.  They have been treated with a stain resistant chemical.

The fifth photo is with his bros.  Notice they have all changed out for the duck ties.

The last photo is Elder Malachowski telling them of a tender mercy they had received. This senior missionary grew up in England, although his parents were Polish.  His father had to flee for his life, when Russia took over.  I think his father and uncle had worked for the secret service??  Elder Malachowski is here, but he can’t get his legal papers to stay, until he can document his nationality.  One piece of information he needed was his mother’s birth data.  On a preparation day, they went out to the town they thought she had been born in.  They went to the church (where that type of birth information is recorded) but the priest was away.  The clerk there said he would have the priest contact them.  They then walked around the church and took several photos.  They crossed the street and saw a large estate or castle structure behind a gate.  The groundskeeper asked them if they would like to come in and look around the grounds.  Of course they did.  After that, he asked if they would like to go inside?  Yes!  The housekeeper showed them around.  Again, they took several photos.  A bank owns this place now, and they run events and seminars in it.  The end of the story is that when the priest called them back, he had the mother’s information.  She had been baptized in that church and had been born in that castle.  The mother’s names they had been using was correct, but in the wrong order.  They got details they needed and photos for family history.  His mother’s father had been caretaker of the castle.

I think he has one more Zone conference before you get him back.  We are not in his Zone anymore, but he said he will be in Warsaw for his departure on a day our group will be visiting.  One last chance to take a photo for you, and one last chance to say goodbye.

Our departure date is around June 4th.  I’m not sure how it works for us.  We may fly home to our daughters home in Denver for a visit, before we return to Eden, Utah.  We told him we would take him boating sometime, and we teased him that we would like to approve any girl he becomes serious with!

Week 100 - Goodbye Bialystok, Hello Poznan! Elder Uchtdorf in Gdansk

Poznan Elders - Hadfield & Long
Hey everyone!
This week was pretty hectic, but it was a good one.  We got to go back to Łódź (my second area) for a baptismal interview, which was way good.  We had zone conference on Friday, which went well, I enjoyed it a lot.  We also had a conference in Gdańsk with Elder Uchtdorf yesterday, which was honestly so baller!  I loved it, you could just feel the Spirit so strongly as he spoke, it was the coolest.  We slept over in Gdańsk, then made our way to our cities this morning.  Today is also transfer day, and I'm actually in a new city!  I'm currently in Poznań, and I'm interested to see how this transfer goes.  I'm slightly surprised by the transfer, but it should be good.  I'm with Elder Long, and we are whitewashing, so we'll see how this goes.  That's about all the time I have for this week, but I hope you are doing well and have a good week!
